Behind the scenes

Recently spent a great couple of days photographing and getting know the local brewing scene here in San Francisco with visits to Magnolia Brewing Company in Dogpatch district and Black Sands Brewery, located in the Haight. I’ll admit it can be quite distracting trying to work in such venues, when the beer is free flowing and tasting is such an integral part of the job. We knuckled down and kept control of ourselves until the photography ended. Then managed to play some catch up post shoot, sampling an array of amazing brews. First up was Black Sands Brewery, and owner and head brewer Cole Emde. What a generous, charming and handsome chap he turned out to be. Not too difficult to make a good picture there (see below)

Here’s a little sample of the shoot in action.

The killer brewers gear!

Next stop was Magnolia Brewing Company and it’s founder and brewmaster Dave McLean a doyen of the industry and one of the most generous men you may ever meet.

With signs like this is was tough not to be distracted.

Meet some of the team.

The great temptation!!

The heavily layered backdrop.

Spent some time recently on a assignment for April Six Agency out of San Francisco. They threw out the exciting prospect of heading to Toronto, Canada for a week to create a series of environmental portraits for Cogeco/ Peer 1,  a managed cloud, hosting and IT services company servicing the globe. Of course we jumped at the opportunity before realizing that a blizzard was on course for Toronto and we’d be working through a snow storm!! Had a great couple of days with a great and collaborative crew. Below are some of the results including the massive banners and OOH executions currently running across the country.

Post shoot we had a little time down in Toronto and got to see a lot of what this amazing city had to offer. Look forward to getting back there soon.

Thanks to a great crew, agency and client.

Pleased to see imagery from our recent shoot at QT Museum Wellington, New Zealand finally making it’s way to the website and advertising for the re launch of the hotel.

We travelled to Wellington earlier this year on a commission to photograph the hotel under the new banner of QT Museum Wellington. This unique property now joining the portfolio of QT properties. Straight from their site it reads, ” Fall down the rabbit hole into an explosion of color and texture at Wellington’s new design-driven Hotel, QT Museum Wellington. Our walls host a curated collection of high & low brow art sitting in a stunning harbourside location & engulfed  by vines and vivd ivy.”

“Your new Wellington creative hub is the epitome of cool luxury – high tech, sophisticated spaces & a paradise for foodies. Go beyond your boundaries as you are challenged by the scale of our art while experiencing the comfort of having the modern traveller needs at your fingertips.”

Art, design, curiosities and a dash of the absurd – QT Museum Wellington.

Travelled with great mate and collaborator Tom Hood, as always we managed to mix a heavy dose of photography work with some downtime exploring the Martinborough wine region, in the South Wairarapa outside of Wellington. Thanks for the detailed research of finding some superb Pinot Noir destination’s Tom, favorite and stand out for me was 2014 John Martin Pinot Noir. Travel snaps below.

In continuing our series on makers and artisans of San Francisco we recently had the pleasure of photographing head distiller of Gin company Distillery 209, Arne Hillesland.

Headquartered right on the Bay, a stones throw from the SF Giants baseball team, this is the only distillery in the world that is built over water – on renovated Pier 50 in San Francisco. The natural cooling properties of 13 feet of San Francisco bay water beneath the pier keeps the air temperature in the distillery perfect for distilling all year-round.

Arne is a Bay area native who embodies the Renaissance nature of many of those who inhabit this unique city. Prior to morphing into a world-class master distiller, a.k.a Ginerator, this amateur chef and saxophonist took a twenty-year journey through Silicon Valley and a career in high technology manufacturing and engineering, followed by a detour into start ups and artificial intelligence.

Thanks to the team at 209, Arne Hillesland, Leslie Rudd and Wendi Green, it was a pleasure to visit, appreciate you making it possible.

We recently spent 2 days working with Casey Morton, professional female boxer recently at the headquarters of Victor Conte’s SNAC Company outside San Francisco. Victor has created a state of the art facility and training regimes for a select group of elite american athletes, that range from pro football players, olympic track and field athletes and professional boxers.  Casey Morton utilizes the SNAC facility, its trainers and its products for the strength and conditioning aspects of her training regime.  #caseymorton

You can spend lengthy amounts of time and funds conceiving new personal projects to keep your creative energy going and to produce new work to show clients. Last week was a different story for us! Working away in the studio, we heard the approaching sound of sirens, closer, closer still, then atop us. At that point Eszter opens the front doors and enthusiastically says you’d better get out here – pronto!

The commercial/residential space across from us was well ablaze and there had been a 2 alarm alert sent out, and trucks were arriving from everywhere. As any good assistant would do – Brian De Simone instantly replaced the iPhone in my hand with a more professional approach and told me to get to work.

Being right in the middle of the action before the first responders arrived saw me with unfettered access as the SFFD men and women got to work tackling this huge fire. Police lines were getting drawn all around me but somehow they couldn’t work out who I was or where I came from, opting to leave me on the playing field as it were. Within minutes there were 12 fire engines plus emergency vehicles surrounding me. Here’s some of the collection of images I made of the SFFD heroes getting the job done.

Thank you to all who gave their service that day. You bravely saved the property from total ruin and protected nearby residents from a catastrophe. Hats off to you.

I was recently asked by a potential hotel client if I could explain how “eszter and david” work together on shoot days, and how are our images produced. My response was to pull up a few examples of our work and take them back to their essence – before and after scenarios.

As a duo we collaborate intensively on shoots for start to finish. My general roll is that of photographer and all that that entails, with Eszter’s role a little broader, encompassing pre production, overseeing digital technicians, on set producer and ultimately retouching all our imagery. Hotel work is fast and furious, generally with lots of hurdles along the way, in most cases we are working with a partially built and sparingly furnished construction site. In order for our clients to have a marketing campaign and print ads out as a lead up to hotel opening dates we usually shoot during final stages of construction and have to be fast, nimble and accommodating to construction workers, designers, staff training, management and a host of hourly visitors all with their own agendas and looming deadlines. We will always start with a pre production walk through on arrival and begin to scope and build a library of potential shoot angles with a hand held camera trying to create a cohesive narrative that best showcases the property. This then gets edited and built into a document we present to our client to showcase our vision. From there we begin creating a shoot schedule based around accessibility, talent, weather and host of other variables.

Following I have collated a selection of initial scouting snaps, followed by the final images. What a difference a little production, lighting, talent and retouching/ post production can do.

Just finishing post production on a recent shoot involving a cast of young professional models and had forgotten how much energy 6-8 year olds exude. Here’s a little look at BTS and a selection of shots coming out of Eszter’s post production house. To see more visit the site eszteranddavid.com

The year has started in earnest here in San Francisco, bookings, scheduling new shoots, personal work, client connections, studio maintenance and the dreaded paperwork. Eszter is on a manic retouching schedule to finalize the 4 jobs she is juggling at the moment and I’m working hard to hold down the fort and the demands of 2 kids, who just missed a heck of schooling – great life but can get a little complicated at times!! Thought I’d put together a summer inspired post from our recent Bali job, including some new shots just coming out of post production and some BTS.
