Recently spent a great couple of days photographing and getting know the local brewing scene here in San Francisco with visits to Magnolia Brewing Company in Dogpatch district and Black Sands Brewery, located in the Haight. I’ll admit it can be quite distracting trying to work in such venues, when the beer is free flowing and tasting is such an integral part of the job. We knuckled down and kept control of ourselves until the photography ended. Then managed to play some catch up post shoot, sampling an array of amazing brews. First up was Black Sands Brewery, and owner and head brewer Cole Emde. What a generous, charming and handsome chap he turned out to be. Not too difficult to make a good picture there (see below)

Here’s a little sample of the shoot in action.

The killer brewers gear!

Next stop was Magnolia Brewing Company and it’s founder and brewmaster Dave McLean a doyen of the industry and one of the most generous men you may ever meet.

With signs like this is was tough not to be distracted.

Meet some of the team.

The great temptation!!

Great to see some imagery we shot for the boys at Trick Dog bar in San Francisco being put to good use. Travel and Leisure’s current issue showcases the best bars and nightspots across the globe. When it comes to SF of course Trick Dog is right up there on top. To Scott Baird, Josh Harris, Morgan Schick, the Bon Vivants well done boys, you are the cocktail geniuses. Drinks on you next time.

Wow a lot happens when ones work takes them on the road for 5-6 weeks!! Having left the Bay area Thanksgiving week with kid’s in tow for a working trip to Boulder and a side trip to Vail for skiing practice. Then immediately heading downunder to drop the kid’s and u-turning back up to Bali to finish a huge hotel assignment for Double Six Luxury Hotel, we find ourselves back in SF minus our two favourite local food haunts, namely Chez Papa in Potrero Hill, and Local’s Corner in the Mission right by our studio. Having become very friendly with Timmy, Chef de Cuisine at Local’s Corner after recently photographing him shortly before leaving; returning home to find both he and the restaurant gone was a sad day indeed. Wishing you all the best Timmy in your new ventures in Seattle. Take a moment to read the following article on the “demise of Local’s Corner”. Disappointing to read, but urban change and revitalization are a part of life.

Here’s a couple of Timmy’s portraits and my gorgeous stand in Eszter!!

In our spare time we have been immersed producing a new personal series entitled “Mission Statement”, where we are exploring the faces, characters and business entities in our neighborhood, a district changing at a rapid rate. One of our first stops was to visit the lads at Trick Dog.

We dropped by for a quick weekend scout, daughters in tow, proposed a few angles to the lads and then returned a couple of days later to craft some portraits.

I always find it great to look back on scout shots and see were we managed to take those in initial thoughts on location and angles when infused with light, color and characters.

I am very excited to see the passion my eldest daughter shows the moment she sneaks off with the Canon 5D during my tech scouts.
